About this picture: The key to understanding “Me and My Parrots”, which she painted in 1941, is to understand Frida Kahlo. She created “Me and My Parrots” the same year her father died and during her affair with photographer Nikolas Muray, one of the most successful portrait photographers in the United States of America. The four parrots, borrowed from Hindu imagery in which they are considered bearers of the love god Kama, serve as erotic symbols of Frida's relationship with the photographer. She also painted Self-portrait with Braid in 1941.
