The personal is political. This phrase is most commonly linked to the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, whose exponents employed it as a means of exposing the structure of oppressive patriarchy hidden beneath everyday life.
But decades before this, Frida Kahlo had achieved a remarkable synthesis of the personal and political, through the total output of fewer than 150 paintings that she created during her short lifetime.
Her works ranged from those expressing intense introspection, to sophisticated mappings of the newly democratic Mexico's search for a national identity, to extraordinarily ambitious canvases dealing with global human history and metaphysics.
